What Is Rental Assistance?

Rental assistance is a monthly contribution by the Ministry of Construction and Housing toward renting a home in the private market. Assistance begins after a certificate of eligibility is issued and a lease that complies with Ministry rules is presented.

The amount is not uniform. It is determined by the applicable program, family status, benefits or income, and other factors. Assistance amounts and income tests are updated, so the official source should be checked at the time of application.

Who May Qualify?

Under disability-related routes, an individual with no housing ownership who receives a General Disability Pension and has a degree of incapacity of at least 75%, and a family with no housing ownership in which one spouse meets the program's benefit and incapacity requirements, may qualify if all other conditions are met. Separate programs exist for older adults, families, single-parent households, and other populations.

Each program reviews a different combination of prior home ownership, income, benefits, and household composition. Receiving a benefit does not guarantee that every program requirement is met.

What Is Required to Implement the Assistance?

After approval, a certificate of eligibility is issued. To use it, the applicant must present a residential lease for a home and locality permitted by the program rules. Under applicable routes, assistance may not be used for a rental from a first-degree relative.
